Road to the bilingual -2
I always keep in mind that I speak English in lower voice than I speak Japanese. It would be just coincident that English native speaker's voice is a bit higher when they speak Japanese than when they speak English. But I find it is true. So, I always try to make my voice lower especially when I speak to someone I have just met.
In Japane generally it is told that a highter voice sounds more polite. When I took so-called "social manner training" at the first job which I worked for just after I guraduated from collage, I was told that I had to use my sweetest voice on the phone, which means you have to make your voice highter than ever when you answer the phone which might be from customers.
I've found some differences of the ideas of pliteness between Japanese and English since I started living in Ireland. Will post it next time.
